Preston North End struck a late loan deal for Manchester City teenager Lukas Nmecha yesterday, on the final day of the transfer window.
This is a deal that should fill The Lilywhites fans with a lot of confidence, as they hope of making the Championship play-offs this season, after marginally missing out last year.
Man City will also be keen to give their promising teenager game time. Nmecha will be behind Man City legend Sergio Aguero and Gabriel Jesus in Pep Guardiola’s pecking order, with the Spanish manager also opting to use Raheem Sterling as a striker. Therefore, this is a loan deal that makes sense, to avoid a young talented player wasting away with limited game time.
Nmecha famously scored the winning goal in England under-19s European championship final win over Portugal last year. Nmecha also featured heavily for The Blues on their preseason tour, even scoring his first goal for the club against Bayern Munich.
The Lilywhites have been busy this transfer window, including signing Nmecha’s teammate Brandon Barker on loan, as they attempt to improve on their seventh-place finish last season and earn a play-off place.
Preston opened their 2018/19 Championship campaign strongly last Saturday, beating QPR 1-0, but face a tough test at Swansea tomorrow. It is unclear whether Nmecha will start that match, but as a versatile forward that can play as a striker or winger, he may be very useful as a bench option as he acclimatises to his new club.
Manager Alex Neil has a lot of good attacking players at his disposal and Nmecha will only add to the wealth of talent. Both City and Preston will be hoping he gets the game time he needs.
