According to a recent report from Ouest France, Jonathan Kodjia could be set for a move away in this month’s transfer window. The 29-year-old currently plays his football at Championship side Aston Villa and has done so since leaving Bristol City back in the summer of 2016, although a lack of regular gametime under new Villans manager Dean Smith has called his future at the club into question.
And reports suggest that the striker could be on his way out of Villa Park this month in a bid for more regular first team football, with former club Angers reportedly keen on the 29-year-old, yet these reports should also be of keen interest to West Brom boss Darren Moore, as raiding their Midlands rivals for the Ivory Coast international could seriously strengthen the Baggies heading into the second half of the season.
Ultimately, Moore’s side have given themselves a real chance of securing an immediate return back to the Premier League this season given they sit fourth in the Championship ahead of their clash with Bolton Wanderers this evening, knowing that victory would take them above Sheffield United into third place in the division.
And much of their success this term has come as a result of the sheer volume of goals they have scored, with Moore’s side the highest scorers in the second tier this season with a staggering 55 goals from their 27 games, three more than the next highest goal-scorers Norwich City.
And with Dwight Gayle (14) and Jay Rodriguez (13) scoring goals for fun for the Baggies this time round, continuing to do so will give them a great chance of sustaining a promotion push until the end of the season – yes, only Norwich have conceded more than West Brom of those sides in the top nine, but the Baggies’ relentlessness in front of goal has got them to fourth already.
And luring Kodjia away from Midlands rivals Villa will only serve to bolster that already flourishing striking department, thus seriously strengthening Moore’s side as they go in search of promotion back to the top-flight.
The 29-year-old may have struggled to just 17 Championship starts for Smith’s side this term, but in that time he has still managed to net six goals and lay on three assists for the Villans, who sit behind only West Brom and indeed Norwich in terms of goals scored in the second tier this time round.
And while Kodjia struggled with injury last term in appearing only 15 times in the Championship for Villa, one mustn’t forget the 19 goals he bagged for the club in their first season in the second tier in 2016/17, having netted 19 the campaign before for Bristol City to thus earn a move to Villa Park – clearly, when fit and playing regularly, the Ivory Coast international is extremely deadly in front of goal.
And with West Brom in need of that extra match-winning quality after seeing Harvey Barnes’ loan spell cut short earlier this month by parent club Leicester City, a move for Kodjia would go some way to giving them that extra spark in the final third – quality that could take them even further up the table.
And given the sheer volume of goals they have already scored, and in doing so ascending them to fourth place in the division, adding Kodjia could seriously strengthen Moore’s side as the Championship season heads towards its May conclusion.
