Sheffield Wednesday’s best possible XI under Jos Luhukay

Sheffield Wednesday’s best possible XI under Jos Luhukay

Sheffield Wednesday have started the current campaign in a rather disappointing manner as they’ve lacked spirit and fight at times.

The Owls have an outside chance of pushing for a play-off place this season, but this will all depend on whether they can ensure consistency. Indeed, Jos Luhukay has had to deal with a number of injuries and fitness concerns already this season, so it’s fair to say that he hasn’t been able to field his strongest side just yet.

It’s important that the Dutchman can do his best to find a settled side, but he may need a lot of luck to do so as injuries can impact his match selection.

So, in an ideal world where Sheffield Wednesday have a fully fit squad with no injuries or suspensions to speak of, here’s an idea of what Luhukay’s strongest XI would look like…

We’ve gone with a 4-2-3-1 formation, as that is the formation that would make the Owls very dangerous in attack by providing support for the lone striker, with two defensive-minded midfielders keeping the opposition at bay.

Kieren Westwood was linked with a number of moves away this summer, but he is arguably the best goalkeeper at the club so he should be given the No 1 jersey in-between the sticks.

Tom Lees and Joost Van Aken would be the perfect central defensive partnership for the Owls this season, but the latter is currently out on the sidelines suffering with an injury. Also, Liam Palmer will take up his usual position on the right-hand side of defence, while Daniel Pudil looks to make use of his strength and crossing ability.

In midfield, the likes of Barry Bannan and Joey Pelupessy would protect the defensive line and work their way forward to try and support play in the final third. The Owls’ attacking three would consist of Adam Reach, Fernando Forestieri and Marco Matias. Indeed, Reach is an accomplished crosser of the ball and Forestieri has developed into a little magician during his time at Hillsborough, with Matias causing problems with his jinking runs.

Lastly, the forever-reliable Atdhe Nuhiu would lead the line for Sheffield Wednesday as a natural goalscorer that constantly makes life hell for the opposition due to his height.
