Marcelo Bielsa has made it explicitly clear on countless occasions that January signings, if any, will be at a premium for Leeds United.
Leeds might well be sitting at the top of the Championship table but there is certainly plenty of reason to suggest that new signings are needed this month.
Bielsa’s preference to deploy Pablo Hernandez in a central role has left Jack Harrison as the club’s most obvious choice on the right side of midfield, but his personal struggle to adapt to the demands of Championship football has forced plenty of supporters to call for a winter acquisition.
The arrival of Ibai Gomez, a player who has played under Bielsa in the past, has been touted in recent weeks, but a report from El Gol Digital appears to have poured cold water over those reports.
The report claims that Gomez is set to re-sign for Athletic Bilbao this month after he rejected a new contract offer from Alaves.
While a return to Bilbao is the more natural move for the Spaniard, a handful of Leeds supporters had hoped the prospect of a reunion with Bielsa at Elland Road would swing Gomez’s decision in their favour.
But Leeds have had no such luck and fans have taken to Twitter to express their frustration, with a handful implying that they never stood a realistic chance of signing him despite his affiliation with the charismatic Argentine.
Here’s what some Leeds fans have had to say about Gomez’s imminent move to Athletic Bilbao…
had we ever actually made a move on him and offer or was it always speculation

Story goes that Alaves wanted him to sign a new deal but were also aware that Gomez loves Bielsa and had a great relationship with him and indeed Bielsa made him the player he is today. Bilboa, Ath Madrid and Marseilles I believe are also aware his contract ends soon.

We will end up with couple of loans if we’re lucky

From Jack Harrisson to Gomez ?
Never ever going to happen unless he sells Roofe to a Bournemouth /Leicester/ Newcastle to raise funds. This guy won’t spen even 2 million to replace Saiz. Farcical when we NEED strengthening

Typical. Genuinely thought he’d be the Saiz replacement.

I never believed he was a realistic target. Doesn't fit the clubs transfer policy at all. Too old, too expensive and earns to much.
