The Newcastle fans in the Transfer Tavern are hopeful of Rafa Benitez’s demands being fulfilled so he can build on their brilliant 10th place finish from last season.
The Magpies were defensively sound last season but with rumours circulating about captain Jamaal Lascelles’ future at the club, Newcastle fans everywhere are praying that their best players decide to stay at the club, so they can build on their brilliant work from last season. If worst comes to worst or if the Magpies are looking for a strong partner with Lascelles, our punters believe that Manchester United’s Chris Smalling, (who is valued at £16.2 million on Transfermarkt) would be a brilliant signing and one that could increase the likelihood of clean sheets.
The 28-year-old was used a lot more than many believed he would last season, due to the injuries of Eric Bailly and Lindelof in defence, so considering how important he was at times to the Red Devils, it’s surprising how quickly they’re prepared to get rid of him in place of a new defender. Newcastle, on the other hand, would love to be extra solidified at the back, meaning that once the back-line is completed, they can focus on bringing in a reliable goalscorer to bang the goals in for them.
All in all, if Smalling is truly available, Newcastle should see the Englishman as a terrific option and one that could definitely improve the Magpies going forward as they look to build on their 10th place finish from last season.
