Kenny Jackett’s Portsmouth are flying high in League One and look nailed on for promotion at this stage in the season, but they are refusing to rest on their laurels in their hunt for a place in the second tier of English football.

Indeed, with Pompey leading the way in League One, it would be fair to assume that January signings are not a prerequisite for promotion, but the club have wasted no time in adding further depth to their squad ahead of the run in.

Just two days into the transfer window, Portsmouth confirmed the signing of Andy Cannon from Rochdale in a deal worth £149k, with the player putting pen to paper on a two and a half year deal.

The 22-year-old arrives at the league leaders with a strong reputation, and the supporters will be hoping that his versatility can prove a genuine asset as the season develops.

Following his arrival, Jackett said (via Portsmouthfc.co.uk): “I see Andy as an attacking midfielder and feel he will be a good addition to our squad. I’m looking forward to working with him.”

And Cannon provided a glimpse of his credentials to play as an attacking midfielder in a recent training video published on Portsmouth’s official Twitter page, in which he scored a handful of goals, played a neat cross-field pass and, much to the surprise of the supporters, dispossessed Matt Clarke before rifling the ball into the net.

The snippet of action has given the fans plenty to get excited about and they will be hoping to see him in action for the first time when they face Blackpool on Saturday.

Here’s what the Portsmouth fans had to say in response to Cannon’s training video…
