Despite their recent run of form over the last few games, Bielsa has transformed Leeds into one of the most attractive sides in the Championship.
Under the Argentine’s tutelage, the Leeds players have improved massively and one midfielder who has benefited as a direct result of that has been Mateusz Klich.
Similarly, Samu Saiz has arguably become one of the best midfielders in the Championship and has blossomed under Leeds’ newfound high-tempo style. With both players transformed, let’s compare the two.
Following a solid season with FC Twente, Kilch didn’t make the best of starts to his Leeds career and only made 10 appearances for the Yorkshire side before being sent on loan to FC Utrecht.
On his return, it was unsure how he would settle into Bielsa’s side but straight away, he’s been the perfect man to carry out the box-to-box role for Leeds. In 12 games, he’s already scored four goals and created a further three. With Kemar Roofe out, his ability to score goals in midfield will be crucial in keeping the club’s promotion hopes alive.
If he can keep up this form, there’s no doubt that Leeds made an absolute steal last year.
TT Grade: B
Whereas Klich took time to bed into the side, Samu Saiz has been an instant starter since he arrived from Spanish side Huesca last year. In his first season for the club, the Spaniard made 34 appearances, scoring five goals and creating a further eight.
Moreover, amid a season of turmoil for Leeds which saw them rattle through the managers, the Spaniard was one of the few constants in the side and performed well amid an uncertain atmosphere at Elland Road.
This season his game has gone to another level and so far, he’s been playing at a level that may classify him as one of the best players in the Championship. Although he’s only registered two assists, his ability to beat players and make the defence-splitting pass is a quality that not many have in the league.
TT Grade: A-
Both players have been superb this season, which makes this battle a very tough one to call. However, due to his natural ability and potential to open up a team on his own, Saiz wins this one.
Aside from Pablo Hernandez, Saiz is arguably the club’s best player and he’s proven that so far this season. His performances will dictate where the club go this season and if he keeps his performances up, he could well take Leeds back to the Premier League.
