Transfer Battle: Pablo Hernandez vs Oliver Burke

Leeds take on West Brom in what is a huge Championship game on Saturday afternoon and one that already has huge ramifications on both side’s seasons.

Bielsa has been hit with injuries over the last few weeks but recently he welcomed back star man Pablo Hernandez to his side.

Surprisingly, West Brom have become one of the best attacking sides in the league and although he hasn’t played much since his summer arrival, Darren Moore has in his midst, a very talented yet struggling player who could add a lot to the team if he can start to perform.

Oliver Burke

Since bursting onto the scene for Nottingham Forest, Oliver Burke has failed to live up to the massive hype that surrounded him. The Scottish attacker joined Bundesliga side RB Leipzig in a deal worth £13 million but was absolutely terrible in Germany despite playing 25 times for the German club. He was brought back to England by West Brom last year in a deal worth £15 million but as of yet, hasn’t had much of an impact.

Described as an ’empty hard drive’ during his time in German, Burke has outstanding pace and is great with the ball but that’s where it ends. He doesn’t make the right decision in the final third and isn’t a very good finisher.

He made 15 appearances for West Brom last year and so far this he’s only made one. As it stands, it looks as though West Brom have overpaid for him.

Pablo Hernandez

Since he arrived at Leeds United, Pablo Hernadez has turned into one of, if not the best player at the club. The attacker has been one of the few players to perform at a constant level at a club that has gone through multiple managers and in his first season with the club, he scored six goals while also grabbing eight assists. Following his superb first season, he won the ‘Player of the Year’ and ‘Players Player of the Year’ awards.

Under Bielsa, Hernandez has remained a key player and although he may not possess the physical attributes that Burke may have his intelligence is the main part of his game.

Thankfully for Leeds, the Spaniard has returned, and with him in the side, they have one of the better attackers in the league.

TT Grade: B+

The Verdict:

In fairness, this wasn’t the hardest battle. Oliver Burke is a good talent but his football intelligence is absolutely woeful. In Pablo Hernandez, Leeds United have one of the best players in the league and one that is going to be crucial in their promotion campaign.

Burke has to improve his game, otherwise, he will go down as a very expensive flop.
