According to The Mirror, Premier League outfits Cardiff and Burnley are set to battle it out for West Brom ace Matt Phillips.
This will come as disappointing news to West Brom fans as the Scotland international has been one of the club’s best performers this season. He has clearly shown that he is a Premier League player, and it has been his versatility that has set him apart from other players. He has played as a winger, a wing-back and even a central midfield and has been pivotal to Darren Moore’s team.
However, as bad as it may seem to West Brom fans to see Phillips go, a bidding war between two Premier League clubs may be what the club need to raise funds during this transfer window. The Baggies are not in the strongest financial position at the moment, and the injection of money for a Phillips sale may be what the club need to buy in a central midfield, something that they crave.
Obviously, the ideal situation for the club is to keep hold of Phillips, as, after all, it may be hard to replace him. However, if he were to leave, West Brom must take the positives from something that risks derailing their promotion push this season.
With the likes of Jay Rodriguez at the club, West Brom do have players that can deputise as wingers in Phillips’ absence, and they even have Tosin Adarabioyo to play as a right wing-back. It’s not ideal, but if this deal were to happen, West Brom can still make the most of it.
