What does the future hold for Samu Saiz?

When Samu Saiz was signed by Thomas Christiansen in summer 2017 a lot of Leeds fans had high hopes of the midfielder. He quickly showed what he was about, scoring a hat-trick on his competitive debut in a 4-1 win over Port Vale in the Carabao Cup, although it looks like the appointment of Marcelo Bielsa could have ruined Saiz’s Leeds career.

As the likes of Kemar Roofe, Liam Cooper, Luke Ayling, Gjanni Alioski, Mateusz Klich and countless other stars at Elland Road have seen their form improve ten-fold under Marcelo Bielsa. The Argentine seems to be having the opposite effect on Samu Saiz, and an Elland Road exit is looking like a serious possibility for the midfielder, who had only just found a home in football after going from club to club in his native Spain.

The 27-year-old failed to make the grade at Real Madrid, Atletico Madrid, Getafe and Almeria and when he made the move to Yorkshire under Thomas Christiansen, it looked like the midfielder finally had somewhere where he could flourish. Now, though, just over a year after making that move it looks like Saiz could be forced to make yet another switch as his form under Bielsa has been woeful.

Whatever the 63-year-old gaffer has been putting in the water at Thorp Arch has been having opposite effects on Saiz. After his debut season at Elland Road saw the 27-year-old impress fans everywhere with his nine goals and eight assists in all competitions making him a standout performer for The Whites. However, in 17 games this campaign he’s scored just once and set up a further two goals for teammates, looking well off the pace.

If Bielsa can’t spark an upturn of form from Saiz soon then the fans will be calling for the Spanish midfielder to be sold and after his journeyman career up until finding a home at Elland Road, it would be hard to see where he might be playing his football if he does become the first major casualty of the Bielsa era at the club. Hopefully, Saiz can find form and establish himself again, but at the moment that looks extremely unlikely.
