What does the future hold for Tom Pearce at Leeds United?

Leeds United drafted in a number of players during the summer transfer window after announcing Marcelo Bielsa as Paul Heckingbottom’s successor.

The Whites managed to secure the services of the likes of Patrick Bamford, Lewis Baker, Isiah Brown, Barry Douglas, Jamal Blackman and Jack Harrison during the summer months.

However, this left some of the current squad fearing for their future in the Championship under Marcelo Bielsa, with a limited amount of space for players to break into the starting XI.

Tom Pearce joined Leeds’ youth academy back in 2014 and soon rose up through the ranks. He impressed for Leeds Under 18s during the 2015-16 season, with Pearce scoring eight goals from left-back in 26 games. And, on 9 June 2016, the Englishman signed a professional contract for the club and was progressing in Leeds’ Under 23 squad.

Indeed, the youngster was given his first call-up to the first team on the 7th of January 2018, when he was named on the bench against Newport County in a 2–1 defeat in the third round of the FA Cup. But, his first involvement in a League squad came on the 31st of January, when he was named on the bench in a 0–0 draw against Hull City.

The left-back was a regular feature under Paul Heckingbottom and really caught the eye towards the end of last season, as he was shortlisted for Leeds United’s Young Player of the Year award.

However, things haven’t gone to plan for the youngster in the current campaign, with just a handful of appearances to his name under Marcelo Bielsa this season. Indeed, this can be put down to the likes of Barry Douglas and Gaetano Berardi keeping him out of the side, which could force the youngster to contemplate his future.

Interestingly, the 20-year-old signed a new four-year deal at the club back in June, but he has been the subject of interest from the likes of Everton and Bournemouth in recent weeks.

So, having witnessed Sam Byram’s fall from grace since moving to Premier League side West Ham United, Leeds United risk sending Pearce on a similar crash course if Bielsa decides to cash in at some point.
