# Total Duds: Savio Nsereko signing for West Ham for £7.65m was a poor transfer

**This article forms part of our Total Duds feature series, which is where Football Transfer Tavern takes a look at how a player has fared since being signed or sold, using statistical figures and statements from pundits to prove how bad a deal the club got.**

West Ham United were looking for bargains back in January 2009 and ended up picking up Savio Nsereko from Brescia for a fee of £7.65m, per [Transfermarkt](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/savio-nsereko/transfers/spieler/43100). The winger looked to be a promising signing as he had won caps for the Germany under-20 side, which seemed to bode well for the future.

Nsereko featured for the Brescia first team before signing for the Hammers and he had a decent record as he [managed](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/savio-nsereko/transfers/spieler/43100) to make 25 appearances, with [three goals and four assists](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/savio-nsereko/transfers/spieler/43100) to his name. To have one goal contribution in just under every four games was a promising return for a young player.

It was always going to be hard for him as he [joined](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/savio-nsereko/transfers/spieler/43100) West Ham halfway through the season, and it clearly showed as he only [managed](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/savio-nsereko/transfers/spieler/43100) 11 appearances for the east London side in all competitions. He only recorded [two](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/savio-nsereko/transfers/spieler/43100) assists but he was clearly not favoured in training as he started only once and otherwise had to be content with substitute appearances, per [Transfermarkt.](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/savio-nsereko/transfers/spieler/43100)

Clearly he did not set the world alight at the Boleyn Ground and the Irons were not willing to hold onto him for too long as he was sold only six months after signing for the club.

In [August 2009](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/savio-nsereko/transfers/spieler/43100), Serie A side Fiorentina made a [£5.58m](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/savio-nsereko/transfers/spieler/43100) bid for the player and it was accepted by the Hammers as they had clearly seen enough of him during his short stint.

It was arguably a risky transfer in the first place as he was a young footballer who had shown potential but ultimately it wasn’t a good move and West Ham duly lost more than [£2m](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/savio-nsereko/transfers/spieler/43100) on a punt that didn’t work out.
