# Tottenham: Atletico Madrid step up their attempts to sign Kieran Trippier

**Atletico Madrid are set to increase their efforts to land Tottenham Hotspur’s Kieran Trippier this summer, according to a report by [The Sun](https://www.thesun.co.uk/sport/football/9481990/kieran-trippier-atletico-madrid-tottenham-30m-bid/).**

It is claimed the La Liga giants have the England international as one of two options to solve their right-back position next season – Paris Saint-Germain’s Thomas Meunier is thought to be the other.

Diego Simeone is believed to see Trippier as a £25million replacement for Juanfran; however, Juventus are also thought to be interested in acquiring the 28-year-old this summer.

Mauricio Pochettino is believed to be willing to sell the Tottenham man to try and raise funds for new additions ([Daily Mail](https://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-7219559/Danny-Rose-heads-eight-man-list-players-available-Spurs-finance-stadium.html)), whilst the defender did not have the best of years in a Spurs shirt.

Trippier [admitted](https://www.skysports.com/football/news/11675/11733362/tottenhams-kieran-trippier-admits-his-performances-have-not-been-good-at-all) he had a poor campaign last season when he was left out of the England squad for the Nations League finals.

He received plenty of criticism throughout the season with a number of Tottenham supporters venting their frustrations with him via Twitter ([Thisisfutbol](https://thisisfutbol.com/2019/05/blogs/tottenham-fans-react-to-trippier-v-ajax/)), whilst Graeme Souness held back no punches when discussing his defensive abilities (or lack of).

Speaking on Sky Sports following their defeat to Liverpool at Anfield (via [The Sun](https://www.thesun.co.uk/sport/football/8760597/liverpool-spurs-trippier-souness-blast/)), the pundit slammed Trippier for allowing Andy Robertson to have so much space to put in the cross for Roberto Firmino’s goal by saying: “Because he is not a very good defender”.

And, his attacking stats left a little to be desired as well. According to [Transfermarkt](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/kieran-trippier/leistungsdaten/spieler/95810/plus/0?saison=2018), he managed just five assists in 38 appearances across all competitions last season, whereas he recorded [nine in 35 matches](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/kieran-trippier/leistungsdaten/spieler/95810/plus/0?saison=2017) the year before.
