# Tottenham: Barcelona youngster Riqui Puig turned down summer move to Spurs

**Barcelona youngster Riqui Puig reportedly turned down a move to Tottenham this summer according to reports in Spain**

\[freshpress-poll id=”257813″\]

[CCMA claim](https://www.ccma.cat/esport3/el-tottenham-va-sondejar-riqui-puig-lestiu-passat-per-si-volia-anar-hi-com-a-cedit/noticia/2960888/) that the 20-year-old La Masia prospect was subject of interest from Spurs and Mauricio Pochettino in the previous transfer window, however, the report states that Puig turned down a move to north London due to the style of the Premier League.

The news from CCMA comes a day after [Sport revealed](https://www.sport-english.com/en/news/barca/riqui-puig-opens-the-door-to-his-barcelona-exit-7713149) that Puig was open to a move away from Barcelona in search of regular first-team football in a top division, with the defensive midfielder saying: “I’d like to have more minutes (up a level) and if I see I won’t get them I’ll have to make a decision. In theory, I didn’t plan to leave on loan in the winter window, but we’ll see.”

Despite winning praise from the likes of Gennaro Gattuso and being dubbed ‘a small madman’ [by Marca](https://www.marca.com/en/football/barcelona/2018/12/06/5c091df646163f25028b4616.html), Puig is a player who has found it hard to break into the stacked Barcelona midfield.

As stats from [Transfermarkt](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/riqui-puig/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/331511/plus/0?saison=&verein=131&liga=&wettbewerb=&pos=&trainer_id=) show, the anchorman has only managed three first-team appearances for Barcelona with Puig yet to appear for the senior squad this season, resorting to playing for the club’s B side instead this year.

Although Ernesto Valverde recently revealed that Puig will play for the Barcelona first-team someday ([per the Evening Standard](https://www.standard.co.uk/sport/football/riqui-puig-will-play-for-barcelona-first-team-but-i-dont-know-when-that-will-be-says-ernesto-a4278481.html)), it appears that the 20-year-old midfielder could do with a move of some type away from Catalonia in order to get regular football in a top division, yet Tottenham certainly isn’t the answer.

Just like with Barcelona, Puig would be facing a mountain to climb if he was to reconsider a move to Spurs in January following the revelation that the Premier League side were keen on the youngster this summer.

With Pochettino spending a club-record fee for midfielder Tanguy Ndombele in the summer ([per BBC Sport](https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/48841318)) as well as already having the likes of Moussa Sissoko, Eric Dier and now Oliver Skipp in the first-team for the defensive midfield role, Puig would seemingly find it hard to waltz into the Tottenham senior squad and warrant first-team football.

***Tottenham fans, would Puig want to join Pochettino following their attempts in the summer? Let us know!***
