# Tottenham Hotspur: Fans blast Daniel Levy over ‘another huge mistake’ as Spurs pull out of Philippe Coutinho transfer race

**[According to Marca](https://www.marca.com/en/football/barcelona/2020/05/31/5ed39a2b22601def2a8b457a.html), Tottenham Hotspur have now ended their interest in signing Barcelona star Philippe Coutinho, via [@RickSpur](https://twitter.com/RickSpur/status/1267150214080667652).**

[The Spanish outlet](https://www.marca.com/en/football/barcelona/2020/05/31/5ed39a2b22601def2a8b457a.html) reported that Jose Mourinho is not considering a move for the Brazilian as Daniel Levy has decided his wage demands are too high.

Coutinho has spent the past season on loan at Bayern Munich but [Karl-Heinz Rummenigge](https://twitter.com/cfbayern/status/1264147884762693632) recently announced that the Bundesliga club do not plan to sign him permanently.

A number of [English clubs](https://www.marca.com/en/football/barcelona/2020/05/31/5ed39a2b22601def2a8b457a.html) have been monitoring Coutinho but it seems his price is beyond Mourinho’s reach. He reportedly earns around €15m per year, which equates to £13.46m, making him more expensive than the club’s top earner [Harry Kane](https://www.footballinsider247.com/sources-tottenham-told-they-can-sign-superstar-for-8m-next-season/) in the process.

[\[freshpress-poll id=”301481″\]](https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/[freshpress-poll%20id=%22301481%22])

While the playmaker has largely failed to rediscover the form that saw him win [Liverpool’s Player of the Year](https://www.goal.com/en-gb/news/2896/premier-league/2015/05/19/11902542/coutinho-named-liverpools-player-of-the-year-players-player) in 2015, he has still managed to score 21 goals and create 11 assists in 76 appearances for the [Blaugrana](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/philippe-coutinho/leistungsdatenverein/spieler/80444). The 27-year-old has won La Liga twice with the Spanish giants, although he lost his place in the starting lineup to [Antoine Griezmann](https://www.goal.com/en/news/tottenham-could-still-sign-coutinho-says-ex-goalkeeper/1ent3vqkp8z1i12nnlw73hh5y9) once Quique Setien assumed control.

Moreover, he is surely an upgrade on the midfield options available to Mourinho at the moment, as he has a higher statistical rating than the likes of [Tanguy Ndombele](https://www.whoscored.com/Players/80767/Show/Philippe-Coutinho) and [Giovani Lo Celso](https://www.whoscored.com/Players/303908/Show/Giovani-Lo-Celso), via [WhoScored](https://www.whoscored.com/Players/80767/Show/Philippe-Coutinho).

Nevertheless, it appears Levy has made up his mind, although it remains to be seen if he will regret this decision in the future. The Spurs chairman previously missed out on signing [Paulo Dybala](https://www.dailystar.co.uk/sport/football/tottenham-paulo-dybala-transfer-deadline-20691423) after failing to agree terms with the player’s representatives.

Understandably, lots of Spurs fans blasted “classic Levy” over “another huge mistake,” as one supporter bitterly branded Coutinho’s transfer update as “shocking”.
