# Tottenham: Fernandes statistically more impressive but Lo Celso the better fit for Pochettino and Spurs

**Spurs are one of a number of clubs who are reportedly interested in hijacking Manchester United’s deal for Bruno Fernandes ([Correio da Manha](https://www.cmjornal.pt/) via [Sport Witness](https://sportwitness.co.uk/local-media-finally-confident-man-united-offer-week-significant-advances/)).**

Manchester City and PSG are also [said to be looking](https://www.cmjornal.pt/) at the Portuguese international as Sporting Lisbon seek to find the best price for their man.

Meanwhile, it was [reported yesterday](https://www.thesun.co.uk/sport/football/9557035/man-utd-sporting-fernandes-bid/) that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side are set to bid £49m for the 24-year-old despite the fact that the Primeira Liga side are holding out for a fee of £70m.

This could leave the door open for the likes of Spurs as they seek to bolster their midfield which has already seen the addition of [Tanguy Ndombele](https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/48841318) this summer.

With that being said, [Sport Witness](https://sportwitness.co.uk/local-media-finally-confident-man-united-offer-week-significant-advances/) add that the rumours around Fernandes joining Tottenham or Man City are merely a tactical ploy to try and encourage United to get the deal done.

The former Sampdoria and Udinese man had an unbelievable season for Lisbon last year, [netting 32 goals and providing 18 assists in 53 appearances](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/bruno-fernandes/leistungsdaten/spieler/240306/plus/0?saison=2018).

Compare that with Giovani Lo Celso – who has been [linked to Spurs for around a month now](https://www.standard.co.uk/sport/football/tottenham/tottenham-transfer-news-live-now-latest-gossip-targets-rumours-2019-summer-window-done-deal-today-a4176136.html) and contributed [16 goals and six assists](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/giovani-lo-celso/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/348795) for Real Betis last season – Fernandes has a more impressive resume.

However, [42 of the Portuguese international’s games](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/bruno-fernandes/leistungsdaten/spieler/240306/plus/0?saison=2018) for Lisbon in the 2018/19 campaign were played in an attacking midfield role (as per Transfermarkt) – a role which [Christian Eriksen](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/christian-eriksen/leistungsdaten/spieler/69633) and [Dele Alli](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/dele-alli/leistungsdaten/spieler/207929/plus/0?saison=ges) can both play and have proven themselves in with impressive goals and assists ratios for the north London outfit.

Lo Celso is a more versatile midfielder who has [played over a dozen games](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/giovani-lo-celso/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/348795) in all three of defensive, central and attacking midfield.

Now, despite the purchase of Ndombele, they may still need another versatile midfielder given how [woefully short Mauricio Pochettino was last season](https://www.telegraph.co.uk/football/2019/05/08/champions-league-progress-masks-world-problems-tottenham-mauricio/).

And with similar price tags – [Fernandes’ at £70m](https://www.thesun.co.uk/sport/football/9557035/man-utd-sporting-fernandes-bid/) and Lo Celso’s [reported at £67m](https://www.standard.co.uk/sport/football/tottenham/giovani-lo-celso-to-tottenham-what-spurs-can-expect-from-67m-transfer-who-plays-like-luka-modric-a4194641.html)– all things considered, you’d say the Betis man is the better fit.
