# Tottenham: Harry Winks ‘closing in’ on Sampdoria move

**[Tottenham Hotspur](https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/tottenham-hotspur-news/) midfielder Harry Winks is ‘closing in’ on a loan move to Sampdoria, according to the [Evening Standard](https://www.standard.co.uk/sport/football/tottenham-transfer-news-reguilon-atletico-madrid-loan-b1021403.html#r3z-addoor).**

### The lowdown: One of our own…

A product of the youth system at Spurs, the [academy graduate](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/harry-winks/transfers/spieler/249126) remains a one-club man at present, having amassed [203 senior outings](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/harry-winks/leistungsdatenverein/spieler/249126) for the Lilywhites so far.

However, after the 26-year-old was [omitted](https://www.football.london/tottenham-hotspur-fc/news/tottenham-south-korea-tour-squad-24446576) from Antonio Conte’s pre-season touring squad, it became clear that Winks wasn’t part of the manager’s plans in N17.

Having been [training individually](https://twitter.com/Dan_KP/status/1557649518119817217) as the north Londoners sought suitable buyers, it appears as though a move to Serie A could be on the cards for the [10-cap](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/harry-winks/nationalmannschaft/spieler/249126/verein_id/3299) Englishman…

### The latest: Sampdoria ‘closing in’ on Winks

As per the [Evening Standard](https://www.standard.co.uk/sport/football/tottenham-transfer-news-reguilon-atletico-madrid-loan-b1021403.html#r3z-addoor), Winks is believed to be ‘closing in’ on a loan move to Sampdoria.

It’s claimed that the 26-year-old is now heading for Italy after Spurs were ‘initially holding out for possible Premier League interest’.

Under contract until 2024 ([Transfermarkt](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/harry-winks/profil/spieler/249126)), there is no mention of a purchase option in the report for the Englishman, who was once dubbed a ‘[fabulous](https://www.footballinsider247.com/leeds-can-seal-perfect-winks-signing-after-tottenham-stance-revealed-robinson/)‘ player by former Spurs goalkeeper Paul Robinson.

### The verdict: Change needed

Having previously been a favourite under Mauricio Pochettino, [starting](https://www.bbc.com/sport/football/48368443) the 2019 Champions League final and even eliciting [comparisons](https://www.sportbible.com/football/news-football-pochettino-compares-winks-to-xavi-and-iniesta-20180914) with Spanish legends Andres Iniesta and Xavi, Winks’ career has all but come to a standstill.

His [last Premier League start](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/harry-winks/leistungsdatentrainer/spieler/249126/plus/0/saison/2021/verein/148/trainer_id/3517) under Conte was six months ago in the 4-0 win at Leeds, with the 26-year-old reliant on sporadic and fleeting [substitute appearances](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/harry-winks/leistungsdatentrainer/spieler/249126/plus/0/saison/2021/verein/148/trainer_id/3517) since then.

\[freshpress-quiz id=”397976″\]

[Yet to play](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/harry-winks/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/249126) a solitary minute so far this term, the [£13.5m-valued](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/harry-winks/marktwertverlauf/spieler/249126) midfielder made [30 appearances](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/harry-winks/leistungsdaten/spieler/249126/plus/0?saison=2021) across all competitions for the Lilywhites last season but was limited to [nine](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/harry-winks/leistungsdaten/spieler/249126/plus/0?saison=2021) top-flight starts.

Sharing similar stylistic traits with the likes of Jorginho, Daniel Parejo and Kevin Kampl ([FBRef](https://fbref.com/en/players/2f7acede/Harry-Winks)), hopefully Winks can recapture his best form with a spell away from north London, with a change of scenery seeming like the best option for him at the moment.
