The Belgian defender completed 90 minutes of what was the club’s heaviest-ever defeat at home in all competitions [(via The Telegraph)](https://www.telegraph.co.uk/football/2019/10/01/mauricio-pochettino-disappointed-side-gave-insists-spurs-must/).

Vertonghen came out after the game and apologised to the north London faithful, assuring the fans they have the players to ‘overcome the situation’, with quotes sourced by the [Daily Mail](https://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-7528049/Jan-Vertonghen-left-hurt-ashamed-Tottenham-humiliated-Bayern.html).

The Belgium international hasn’t enjoyed the best of seasons with Spurs, initially being left out of the squad for the first three Premier League fixtures [(via Transfermarkt)](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/jan-vertonghen/leistungsdaten/spieler/43250).

There were even rumours that manager Mauricio Pochettino was thinking twice about offering him a new contract with his current deal due to expire at the end of the season [(via Football Insider)](https://www.footballinsider247.com/sources-pochettino-unconvinced-tottenham-star-should-get-new-deal-after-recent-displays/).

However, reports from the[Daily Mail](https://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-7522171/Tottenham-open-talks-Jan-Vertonghen-new-deal.html) now claim that the club has opened talks with the player over a new deal.

Despite talks over a new contract, some fans were less than thrilled with the centre-back as they took to Twitter to blast Vertonghen after his interview.

Here is a selection of tweets from the Spurs fans:

> He’s 32 bro, this club needs to be more ruthless. Get a young hungry defender. He’s past it.

> I swear to god… if we offer this guy another contract…
>
> I’m glad that he cares and genuinely seems like a great person, but he’s just past it. He needs to go. It’s time to say goodbye to this group.
