# Tottenham Hotspur: Fans praise stand-in captain Eric Dier for words said after defeat to Colchester United

**Tottenham Hotspur fans were praising stand-in captain Eric Dier after he was caught saying something during the penalty shootout defeat to Colchester United.**

[According to reporter Jonathan Veal](https://twitter.com/jonathandveal83/status/1176602625241993217), the Spurs player mouthed the words, ‘that was embarrassing’ after the end of the 90 minutes.

The defensive midfielder proved to be one of the better performers for the Lilywhites in last night’s game, with [football.london](https://www.football.london/tottenham-hotspur-fc/fixtures-results/christian-eriksen-tottenham-player-ratings-16975952) giving the player a six out of 10.

Dier has endured a stop-start season at the club this year, starting just one out of the eight games so far this campaign [(via Transfermarkt)](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/eric-dier/verletzungen/spieler/175722).

The England international has suffered [three separate injuries](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/eric-dier/verletzungen/spieler/175722) in the last year or so, limiting him to just 28 appearances in the [2018/2019 season](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/eric-dier/verletzungen/spieler/175722).

Now it seems that fans are taking to Dier after his comments following the embarrassment of losing to League Two opposition as they took to Twitter to react.

Here is a selection of tweets from fans of the club:

> Good. At least he’s got some bottle in him.

> Does that reaction not suggest that he cares alot more than others? I’d rather 11 Diers than Eriksen at the minute on attitude alone

> Good. We need that kind of mentality and leadership back. Hopefully he can get back to fitness and back in the starting 11
