# Tottenham Hotspur: Jason Cundy urges Spurs to sign Edinson Cavani as cover for Harry Kane

**Former Tottenham Hotspur defender Jason Cundy believes that Paris Saint-Germain striker Edinson Cavani would provide Spurs with the ‘perfect’ solution to their attacking woes following Harry Kane’s long-term absence through injury.**

Kane is set for surgery on a torn hamstring which he suffered away at Southampton on New Year’s Day, leaving Spurs without a main centre-forward for the foreseeable future – with the England hitman [not expected back until April](https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/51055591).

Speaking on [TalkSPORT](https://twitter.com/talkSPORT/status/1215404431459725312), Cundy suggested that Cavani – who has been linked with a PSG exit (El Chiringuito via [Metro](https://metro.co.uk/2020/01/07/arsenal-manchester-united-submit-offers-sign-edinson-cavani-paris-saint-germain-12013968/)) – would be just what Jose Mourinho would be looking for in the January market with no senior [like-for-like replacements](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/tottenham-hotspur/kadernachposition/verein/148) for Kane in the Tottenham squad.

He said: “It’s been a bit of an inconsistent performance under Jose so far, and Kane going is going to be a big blow.

“The good thing is the transfer window is open. \[Spurs\] would rather this happen now than in three weeks’ time when there is absolutely nothing they can do. I think Spurs need to go out and I think they need to get a striker that comes in that is not someone that’s going to be an understudy, someone that’s got to learn their trade.

“Cavani’s name has been mentioned – that to me is perfect for what Spurs need right now. You know what you’re going to get – you’ve got vast experience, and physically, he’ll survive in the Premier League.”

Despite having not played in the Premier League during his career, Cavani is nevertheless [vastly experienced](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/edinson-cavani/transfers/spieler/48280) at the top level, with the Uruguayan leading the line in France as well as in previous spells in Italy. At 32, his powers may have already peaked – with a [49-goal haul](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/edinson-cavani/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/48280) in 2016/17 his best in his career to date.

However, with the Uruguay striker [out of contract](https://bleacherreport.com/articles/2063153-edinson-cavani-psg-agree-on-new-contract-through-2020-season) in the summer, there is every chance he could be an option for Spurs even beyond January – with the market potentially coming to their rescue as Cundy notes himself. Whether he is chosen to hold the fort or provide cover on a more long-term basis, there is certainly a need for a striker at Spurs even without the inconvenience of Kane’s injury – so Mourinho may well be interested in such a deal.

And given Cavani’s track record, there is little to suggest he would not be worth the gamble with Spurs in short supply up top at present.
