# Tottenham Hotspur: Jose Mourinho joins chase for Gabriel Magalhaes amid interest from Arsenal

**It is no secret Tottenham boss Jose Mourinho is keen to strengthen his squad in the summer.**

[Mourinho](https://www.express.co.uk/sport/football/1272006/Tottenham-transfer-news-Jose-Mourinho-three-signings-Spurs) has made it clear he wants to sign a new centre-back, right-back and midfielder.

The Spurs head coach knows he will need to make additions to his defence, as [Jan Vertonghen](https://www.standard.co.uk/sport/football/tottenham-transfer-news-jan-vertonghen-to-leave-free-after-season-a4459431.html) and [Juan Foyth](https://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-8310609/Tottenham-defender-Juan-Foyth-offered-Barcelona-summer.html) are seemingly set to leave, while [Japhet Tanganga](https://www.telegraph.co.uk/football/2020/06/15/exclusive-japhet-tanganga-ruled-tottenhams-restart-stress-fracture/) has been ruled out for the foreseeable future.

According to [Fichajes](https://www.fichajes.net/noticias/oferta-in-extremis-tottenham-gabriel-magalhaes-20200624.html), as relayed by [Ricky Sacks](https://twitter.com/RickSpur/status/1275845503587102721), Tottenham have now submitted a 30 million euro (£27m) offer for Lille defender Gabriel Magalhaes.

It is pretty obvious Spurs have serious problems at the back, as they have conceded more goals in [the Premier League](https://www.premierleague.com/stats/top/clubs/goals_conceded) than Chelsea, Manchester City and Liverpool, as well as Crystal Palace and Sheffield United.

Gabriel, who has been recognised as “[one of the top five central defenders in Europe](https://www.skysports.com/football/news/11095/11974412/gerard-lopez-exclusive-lille-president-tips-machine-gabriel-magalhaes-to-join-really-big-club-amid-everton-interest)” by Lille president Gerard Lopez, has made 24 appearances in Ligue 1 this season, scoring 1 goal, making 1.7 tackles and averaging 3.3 clearances per game via [WhoScored](https://www.whoscored.com/Players/334087/Show/Gabriel).

[The Spanish outlet](https://www.fichajes.net/noticias/oferta-in-extremis-tottenham-gabriel-magalhaes-20200624.html) revealed Mourinho has personally requested that Spurs sign Gabriel.

[\[freshpress-poll id=”306412″\]](https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/[freshpress-poll%20id=%22306412%22])

[Previous reports](https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/tottenham-transfer-rumours/tottenham-hotspur-jose-mourinho-suffers-another-setback-after-brazilian-chooses-napoli-instead/) claimed the Lilywhites had failed to meet Lille’s demands but that no longer appears to be the case.

The Brazilian has been linked with a move to the Premier League as [Arsenal and Everton](https://le10sport.com/football/mercato/exclu-mercato-losc-arsenal-et-everton-ont-degaine-des-offres-490785) made offers for the defender in January. Spurs have a close relationship with the Mastiffs though, which could work in their favour.

Indeed, [Mourinho](https://www.independent.co.uk/sport/football/premier-league/jose-mourinho-tottenham-backroom-staff-spurs-2019-news-assistant-coach-a9210226.html) plundered their ranks for his assistant manager and goalkeeper coach, and is friends with sporting director [Luis Campos](https://talksport.com/football/632851/who-is-luis-campos-transfer-jose-mourinho-martial-mbappe-pepe-tottenham/).

While [Vertonghen](https://www.standard.co.uk/sport/football/tottenham-transfer-news-jan-vertonghen-to-leave-free-after-season-a4459431.html) has signed a short-term extension, he will leave the club as a free agent once the season is completed. The Belgian, who was a favourite of [Mauricio Pochettino](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/mauricio-pochettino/eingesetzteSpieler/trainer/9044), has been a loyal servant for many years.

His departure will leave space in the squad and the 22-year-old could be the perfect fit in his place.
