# Tottenham Hotspur: Lilywhites attempted to sign Paulo Dybala on loan on deadline day

**Tottenham Hotspur attempted to sign Juventus star Paulo Dybala on loan, [according to The Independent.](https://www.independent.co.uk/sport/football/transfers/tottenham-transfer-news-paulo-dybala-image-rights-paris-saint-germain-deadline-day-a9047451.html)**

It is thought that [Spurs](https://www.independent.co.uk/sport/football/transfers/tottenham-transfer-news-paulo-dybala-image-rights-paris-saint-germain-deadline-day-a9047451.html) attempted to sign the Argentine on a loan deal with a legal obligation to buy, but the deal was too complicated and there remained little time.

Paris Saint Germain are thought to have complicated any deal after intermediaries reassured Juventus of their interest in Dybala if a potential sale of [Neymar](https://www.independent.co.uk/sport/football/transfers/tottenham-transfer-news-paulo-dybala-image-rights-paris-saint-germain-deadline-day-a9047451.html) goes through.

The north London side did complete two deadline day deals as [Giovani Lo Celso and Ryan Sessegnon](https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/49283542) joined from Real Betis and Fulham respectively.

After a lot of [speculation](https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/49263773) over Christian Eriksen’s future, the Lilywhites were lucky they didn’t sign Dybala. He may not be in the right frame of mind after the [Turin-based club wanted to sell him](https://www.theguardian.com/football/2019/aug/06/tottenham-prepare-644m-bid-for-juventuss-paulo-dybala), and [he wanted to stay.](https://www.skysports.com/football/news/12961/11772002/paulo-dybala-wants-to-stay-at-juventus-despite-possible-man-utd-swap-deal-with-romelu-lukaku)

Eriksen fared much better than Dybala last season. The 27-year-old [scored 10 goals and assisted a further 16](https://www.whoscored.com/Players/69344/History/Christian-Eriksen) in the Premier League and Champions League.

In stark contrast, Dybala suffered indifferent form last season, scoring and assisting just a combined [14 goals in Serie A and the Champions League.](https://www.whoscored.com/Players/114863/History/Paulo-Dybala)

The difference in quality last season was clear to see in the attacking intent shown by the two players. [Eriksen](https://www.whoscored.com/Players/69344/History/Christian-Eriksen) had more shots and made more key passes per game than his [Argentine counterpart](https://www.whoscored.com/Players/114863/History/Paulo-Dybala)(as per WhoScored).

Not signing Dybala could be a blessing in disguise, due to the uncertainty surrounding the star this season. The Denmark international was the better player last season and could be carrying on from a far more positive position than Dybala.
