# Tottenham Hotspur: Mourinho needs to replace Serge Aurier with Kyle Walker-Peters \[Opinion\]

**Tottenham Hotspur have failed to fill the gap left by Kyle Walker ever since he moved to Manchester City.**

Although [Kieran Trippier](https://www.football.london/tottenham-hotspur-fc/news/kieran-trippier-reveals-one-tottenham-18339220) impressed at times, the England international struggled with inconsistency in his last season with Spurs after his heroics at the 2018 World Cup.

While [Serge Aurier](https://www.football.london/tottenham-hotspur-fc/players/serge-aurier-tottenham-right-back-18522830) has become a permanent feature in that position as of late, his conduct has come under [scrutiny](https://www.skysports.com/football/news/11675/12019098/serge-aurier-monaco-interested-in-signing-tottenham-defender) from the club after breaking the government guidelines during the nationwide lockdown.

Jose Mourinho is short of options and is on the hunt for a new right-back. However, he may not have to look very far, as Kyle Walker-Peters has staked his claim to be given another shot [next season](https://www.football.london/tottenham-hotspur-fc/news/kyle-walker-peters-proved-can-18547369).

\[freshpress-quiz id=”305520″\]

[Aurier](https://www.football.london/tottenham-hotspur-fc/news/kyle-walker-peters-proved-can-18547369) has never looked particularly convincing as Spurs have grown frustrated with his [antics](https://www.football.london/tottenham-hotspur-fc/transfer-news/tottenham-transfer-news-50m-coutinho-18098543) off the pitch.

Questions still remain over his ability to defend, while [Walker-Peters](https://www.football.london/tottenham-hotspur-fc/news/kyle-walker-peters-proved-can-18547369) put in a defensive shift to thwart the Citizens. The 23-year-old, who is [best friends](https://www.dailyecho.co.uk/sport/18478345.kyle-walker-peters-set-stay-southampton-seasons/) with Dele Alli, starred as the Saints beat Man City [1-0](https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/52162235) at St Mary’s Stadium.

Walker-Peters was making just his third start for [Southampton](https://www.football.london/tottenham-hotspur-fc/news/kyle-walker-peters-proved-can-18547369), but didn’t look out of place as he played [the full 90 minutes](https://www.sofascore.com/player/kyle-walker-peters/823085), registering 6 clearances, attempting 6 interceptions, and completing 3 tackles via [SofaScore](https://www.sofascore.com/player/kyle-walker-peters/823085).

The former [England U-21 international](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/kyle-walker-peters/profil/spieler/341051) kept [Raheem Sterling](https://www.football.london/tottenham-hotspur-fc/news/kyle-walker-peters-proved-can-18547369) in his back pocket and limited his chances of scoring all game.

Pep Guardiola eventually replaced Sterling with Phil Foden, although [Walker-Peters](https://www.football.london/tottenham-hotspur-fc/news/kyle-walker-peters-proved-can-18547369) was more than equal to the task, as City failed to score for the first time in [five games](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/manchester-city/spielplandatum/verein/281).

[\[freshpress-poll id=”308156″\]](https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/[freshpress-poll%20id=%22308156%22])

[Mourinho](https://www.football.london/tottenham-hotspur-fc/news/cast-out-mourinho-not-trusted-18119737) is adamant he will not be a part of his plans for the future, after the defender took aim at the Portuguese during an interview with [the Saints’ official website](https://www.southamptonfc.com/news/2020-03-25/feature-interview-kyle-walker-peters-southampton-football-club-march-2020), but he may have to swallow his pride and bring him back to north London.

[The youngster](https://www.football.london/tottenham-hotspur-fc/news/kyle-walker-peters-proved-can-18547369) showed he has more to offer as well as he repeatedly carried the ball down the right-flank and either created an attacking opportunity or won a throw-in.

He continued to [harass](https://www.football.london/tottenham-hotspur-fc/news/kyle-walker-peters-proved-can-18547369) Man City all evening and such persistence has been lacking from Spurs in recent weeks, as they slumped to a disappointing defeat to [Sheffield United](https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/52072984).

Daniel Levy has insisted he will not spend “[rivers of money](https://www.thesun.co.uk/sport/football/11720841/jose-mourinho-spurs-transfer-budget-slashed/)” in the summer, which means Mourinho will have to rely on.

Various clubs have been sniffing around for Aurier, including [Monaco](https://www.skysports.com/football/news/11675/12019098/serge-aurier-monaco-interested-in-signing-tottenham-defender), and the Portuguese could cut his losses and raise some surplus cash.

However, Mourinho should also recall [Walker-Peters](https://www.football.london/tottenham-hotspur-fc/news/kyle-walker-peters-proved-can-18547369) from the South Coast, as he would surely be a cheaper option than trying to find a new right-back in a difficult market. Moreover, he could use the profits from selling Aurier to improve [other areas](https://www.football.london/tottenham-hotspur-fc/news/kyle-walker-peters-proved-can-18547369) that urgently need attention.
