Speaking to Football Insider, former Tottenham defender Alan Hutton has tipped Spurs to secure a new deal for Son Heung-min by January 1, urging Daniel Levy to give him ‘what he wants’ and not waste any time.
According to The Athletic, Spurs are aiming to tie down Son to ward off any potential future interest in the Tottenham star, with the club then set to prioritise a new contract for Hugo Lloris afterwards.
Hutton expects new deal for Son
The 28-year-old has been crucial under Jose Mourinho, with the club apparently wanting to secure a new long-term deal involving significantly higher wages before the January window. It is understood that the South Korean international is on a fairly meagre salary when compared to teammates such as Harry Kane, Tanguy Ndombele and Gareth Bale (Football Insider)
Speaking to Football Insider, Hutton believes that the South Korean should be earning the top bracket in illustrious company, claiming that this move should be an ‘absolute priority’ for Tottenham. He said:
“Just give him what he wants, I mean that, whatever he asks for, just give him it. I think he’s sensational.
“He’s been that player that, even when Tottenham were struggling, he was the one that could really give you something. He’s got pace, he’s clever, he scores all types of goals, he’s got the whole package in my opinion.
“I even sometimes think he’s underrated when you talk about other players in the league – people talk about (Sadio) Mane and (Mo) Salah and all these kind of guys and he is way up there.
“That would be an absolute priority for Tottenham to tie him down, he is so key to what they do, him and Harry Kane have such a great partnership together, they link up so well going forward.”
Transfer Tavern take
It’s little wonder Spurs want to extend his current deal, especially after his recent performances, and it’s arguably high time he was in the top earning bracket with other star players.
If Tottenham can secure a new deal for the Korean forward, Jose Mourinho will keep a hugely valuable asset for years to come.
