Tottenham Hotspur need to act like a 'big club' and make a move for Leeds United goalkeeper Illan Meslier, according to pundit Frank McAvennie.

The Lowdown: Tottenham eyeing goalkeeper

Tottenham are looking at strengthening between the sticks this summer, despite the impressive recent form of Fraser Forster, with Antonio Conte praising his goalkeeper, describing him as a 'fantastic signing' who 'deserves credit.'

Meslier is believed to be on Spurs' radar, with Sky Sports journalist Michael Bridge claiming back in November that he is being eyed as a potential replacement for Hugo Lloris, who is now 36-years-old.

The Leeds shot-stopper is not the only option for the Lilywhites, however, recently being linked to Emiliano Martinez, much to the delight of Alan Hutton, with the pundit describing him as 'outstanding'.

The Latest: McAvennie reacts

In light of the recent news that Leeds are set to demand £30m to part with their goalkeeper, McAvennie was asked by Football Insider whether Tottenham would be willing to spend that much. The pundit said:

They are acting like a big club but they are doing everything except spend money like a big club.

That is down to Daniel Levy. I do not for one minute believe that they do not have any money, so go and spend it. It is not even his money. Daniel Levy does not own Tottenham, I believe it is Joe Lewis’ money.

If you own a club you want to get the best players and you are not going to get them at cut rates. Spurs have got to do that, they have never ever done it.

Spending £30m on a goalkeeper, it is nothing. The big clubs will spend £80-£100m on a goalkeeper. In today’s world it has to be done."

The Verdict: Get it done?

If Tottenham have real ambitions of challenging for the Premier League title and the Champions League, then McAvennie is right in his assessment that they have to be willing to spend big to strengthen key positions.

Hailed as 'unbelievable' by members of the media earlier in the campaign, Meslier is at the right age to be a long-term heir for Lloris, given that he is just 23, and he has impressed at times this season, particularly in the recent 4-2 victory at Wolverhampton Wanderers.

The Frenchman made six saves from inside the box to keep Wolves at bay and help secure three points for his side, while he was also very solid in the recent 1-0 victory against Southampton, making two saves and keeping a clean sheet.

McAvennie is extremely keen for Tottenham to start acting like a 'big club', and they could start off by winning the race for Meslier, amid interest from rivals Chelsea.
