Tottenham Hotspur have been urged to make a move for Southampton midfielder James Ward-Prowse by journalist Pete O'Rourke.

The Lowdown: Tottenham eyeing midfielder

Tottenham have been linked with a range of different options to strengthen in the centre of midfield, with Ward-Prowse recently emerging as a target amid the Englishman's uncertain future at St Mary's.

The Southampton captain is not the only option for Antonio Conte, however, as Joao Palhinha is currently being monitored for a potential transfer swoop, while Nicolo Zaniolo may also be considered.

The Latest: O'Rourke reacts

In an interview with GiveMeSport, O'Rourke reacted to Spurs' links with the Saints skipper, indicating that he would be able to slot right into the midfield.

The journalist said: "I'm sure if they asked for Kane's input into a potential move for Ward-Prowse it would only get positives.

"He's a top player, Ward-Prowse. He's proven in the Premier League, England international, and scores so many goals and provides so many goals as well for Southampton.

"I think he'd be a great fit for Tottenham if they did move for him."

The Verdict: Get it done?

Hailed as 'sensational' by members of the media, the 28-year-old has been absolutely vital for Southampton this season, and he will undoubtedly play a big part in whether they are able to avoid relegation to the Championship.

The England international has amassed a total of eight goals and three assists in 33 appearances in all competitions, recently firing home a stunning free-kick in the Saints' important 1-0 win away at Chelsea.

Set-pieces are what the maestro is renowned for, and he now needs just one more free-kick goal to equal David Beckham's all-time record of 18, but that is not the only facet of his game.

Ward-Prowse ranks in the 87th percentile for shot-creating actions per 90 over the past year, displaying his ability to set up his teammates, and Spurs will need someone to take on those sorts of responsibilities, given that Rodrigo Bentancur is out until November.
