Tottenham are targeting Bayer Leverkusen defender Piero Hincapie despite his new contract extension, according to CBS reporter Ben Jacobs.

The Lowdown: Spurs eye move?

The Ecuador international has been repeatedly linked with reports previously suggesting that Spurs is a real potential landing spot this summer.

However, Hincapie recently put pen to paper on a new deal at Leverkusen, making a deal to sign the South American much, much more difficult than beforehand.

This comes after claims that the 21-year-old was open to joining Antonio Conte's side in January, but according a latest update by Jacobs, Spurs haven't given up hope.

The Latest: Jacobs makes Hincapie to Spurs claim...

According to the CBS reporter, writing via his CaughtOffside substack, Tottenham, alongside Everton and Newcastle, 'really like' Hincapie and 'have him on their radar'.

After his new deal, Leverkusen's top defensive talent could cost in the region of £55million or perhaps even higher.

It's added that the South American could become a more 'urgent priority' for the club given Milan Skriniar is going to Paris-Saint Germain and Inter Milan star Alessandro Bastoni is unlikely to move.

The Verdict: Make the move?

While the player's price tag has risen dramatically, Hincapie could certainly still be worth the punt.

He recently won the Men's Youth Best Player award at a recent Under-20 Conmebol tournament across the pond, highlighting his obvious potential.

The Bundesliga defender, dubbed 'really impressive' by former Leverkusen head coach Gerardo Seoane, has also turned it on at major senior tournaments for his country.

The Ecuadorian stood out as a key player at Qatar's 2022 World Cup, averaging his nation's joint-highest rate of tackles per 90 over a handful of commanding displays (WhoScored).

Still young, Hincapie also falls into the 'buy young' transfer philosophy of Spurs and continues to tick many boxes as his stock rises in Germany.
