Tottenham Hotspur boss Antonio Conte has been slammed for one decision he made last night as his side failed to beat AC Milan in the Champions League last 16.

The Lowdown: Night to forget...

The Lilywhites limped out of Europe on Wednesday evening, managing just two shots on target all game and failing to seriously test the visitors.

Spurs appeared uninspired and lacked any real attacking tempo, making life relatively easy for Stefano Pioli's side who managed to hold their 1-0 aggregate lead.

Tottenham's best chance came very late on when star striker Harry Kane, who was by some distance their standout player, tested Milan keeper Mike Maignan with a downwards header - forcing the Frenchman to parry away.

Boos rang around the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on a night to forget for the club and Conte, who has been subject to fierce criticism since.

The Latest: Conte slammed for 'cowardice' Spurs decision...

Taking to social media, reporter James Maw of The Athletic has accused Conte of 'footballing cowardice' after his decision to bring on defender Davinson Sanchez for Dejan Kulusevski.

He said:

"That Kulusevski sub an act of footballing cowardice from Conte. I can’t fathom it. The best creator in the squad hooked for a centre back with seemingly flaky confidence. Damage limitation for himself, maybe? Don’t see any good reason why Spurs would or should persist with this."

The Verdict: Sums it up...

Spurs supporters appear to have grown tired with Conte's negative and insipid approach to games - a philosophy which is perhaps best summed up by this in-game call.

Cristian Romero's hapless sending off perhaps did force the Italian to bring in another defender, but when you're chasing the game, those in the Spurs stands understandably want their side to throw the kitchen sink.

Alas, Tottenham must now wait till next season to have another shot at silverware, and the prospect of Conte being there appears to be growing ever-more slim.
