Tottenham: Spurs locked in Nicolo Zaniolo agent talks
Tottenham Hotspur are currently in talks with the agent of Roma forward Nicolo Zaniolo as journalist Santi Aouna shares a transfer update.
The Lowdown: Spurs eye Zaniolo move…
Gianluca Di Marzio first broke news of Spurs’ renewed interest in signing the Italy international as Antonio Conte seeks to add upgrades to his first-team squad.
There had been misconstrued reports earlier today of Conte leaving at the end of this season, but as Sky Sports journalist Lyall Thomas explained, there is ‘nothing new’ on the Italian or his contract situation.
As such, it is January business as usual in north London, and Tottenham are still well in contention for a top four place with half of the Premier League season yet to play. However, Conte will likely need upgrades in both attack and at wing-back if he is to guide Spurs to a second successive Champions League finish, with the club currently going through a rough patch of form.
The Latest: Tottenham in agent talks over Zaniolo…
As explained by Aouna, there has been an update on Tottenham’s attempts to sign Zaniolo.
The journalist stated on Twitter that Spurs are currently locked in talks with the 23-year-old’s representative over a move to Hotspur Way, but there has been ‘no official offer’ just yet.
It’s also stated that Zaniolo was offered out to Paris-Saint Germain with no official response, and Roma value the attacker at around €30m (£25m) plus bonuses.
The Verdict: Right man?
As per WhoScored, Zaniolo can be a real creative presence in the forward positions when playing at his very best, even if he hasn’t exactly set the world alight over 2022/23, having scored just twice this term.
The Serie A gem’s numbers from last season indicate that he can provide that spark under Conte and potentially fill the playmaking void left by Christian Eriksen’s exit from N17 three years ago.
In the 20221/22 campaign, the 23-year-old attracted more fouls per 90 and completed more successful take-ons than any player in Jose Mourinho’s side domestically, and the midfielder’s versatility is another plus point. He can play both centrally and wider in attacking midfield, as well as further forward, with Zaniolo’s potential even attracting the interest of Manchester City in 2019.
Described as a ‘decisive player’ in the final third by former Leicester City boss Claudio Ranieri, the Italy international could be exactly what Spurs need, although their supporters will surely be hoping that he can shake off a bad run of form and get back to his very best.
