Journalist Marco Conterio of TUTTOmercatoWEB has shared some 'surprise' news on Pedro Porro's release clause as Tottenham continue to chase a deal.

The Lowdown: Spurs move forward...

Spurs are believed to be closing in on a deal for the Spaniard amid manager Antonio Conte's search for upgrades at right-wing-back.

Talks are claimed to be at an advanced stage after fears of Real Madrid's possible summer interest pushed the north Londoners to take action before January 31.

Porro's release clause of €45 million (£39m) has been a major talking point in negotiations given Sporting have reportedly been stubborn to sell for less over the majority of this window.

The Latest: Conterio shares Porro 'surprise'...

According to Conterio, writing via Twitter, it appears there has been a 'surprise' Porro update out of north London.

The Italian reporter now claims the release clause in his contract can only be activated in the summer, and as a result, Sporting ask for 'more money' to let him go this month.

He explained:

"Surprise between #Tottenham and Pedro Porro.

The player has already said yes but the 45 million pound clause with lo #SportingCP could only be activated in the summer. Sporting ask for more money at #THFC."

The Verdict: Worry for Spurs?

Luckily for Spurs supporters, journalists like Fabrizio Romano are still confident and optimistic the deal will get done for Porro.

Intermediaries like Paul O'Keefe also claim that the clause has been used as more of a valuation 'barometer' in discussions and Tottenham don't seem to be paying it anyway - instead going for a different payment structure.

Taking this into account, whilst this update on Porro's clause does come as a surprise given it's significance throughout January, it appears the 23-year-old's move to north London is still very much on.

Lilywhites supporters will certainly hope this is the case given Man City's ex-starlet will undoubtedly improve Conte's options at wing-back.

As per WhoScored, Porro has racked up Sporting's highest number of league assists with a very impressive six whilst also ranking in their top two for shots at goal and successful key passes per 90.

The attack-minded defender will provide Spurs with a real cutting edge and extra threat from out wide, not to mention longevity given Porro is still pretty young and far off his prime years.
