Tottenham: Sky journalist shares Antonio Conte contract update

Tottenham: Sky journalist shares Antonio Conte contract update - Premier League News

Sky journalist Lyall Thomas has shared an update on mistranslated reports of Antonio Conte leaving Tottenham at the end of this Premier League season.

The Lowdown: Di Marzio’s verdict on Conte…

Earlier this morning, Spurs supporters on social media reacted heavily to a misinterpreted message that Conte looks certain to leave.

Reliable journalist Gianluca Di Marzio was thought to have shared news that the Italian looks set to depart upon the end of his contract with no renewal in sight.

This would have come as a blow mid-way through this important campaign with transfer targets like Pedro Porro and Nicolo Zaniolo potentially brought into question as well.

However, as per Di Marzio’s colleague Thomas, it appears this was merely a mistranslation and the statement was one of opinion not fact.

The Latest: Thomas shares Conte update…

After speaking with Di Marzio ‘this morning’, the reporter has made a clarification on his behalf – stating (via Twitter):

“I’ve spoken to Gianluca this morning and he asked me to clarify; Spurs have proposed talking to him about a new contract but Conte doesn’t want to talk about it while he is concentrating on the season in hand. It is just Gianluca’s prediction that he won’t be the coach next term.”

The Verdict: Relief

While Conte’s contract situation is still up in the air by the looks of things, news of there being no definitive decision over his exit will come as a relief.

As Spurs look to regain some momentum, add necessary transfer additions for January and salvage a potential top four finish from this season – Conte’s departure looking certain would have been a real distraction.

Nine days of the winter window remain and the club have been heavily linked with moves for Sporting Lisbon defender Pedro Porro and Roma forward Nicolo Zaniolo.

The focus will now be on backing Conte with moves for players who could upgrade the 53-year-old’s options and potentially boost his efforts in making this Spurs season a success.

Of course, it will be interesting to see if the former Chelsea head coach will stay beyond this campaign.
