The Lowdown: Dier’s season so far
This season has seen the 28-year-old appear in each of Tottenham’s 22 games across all competitions, starting all but one of those.
This shows just how important a figure he is for Antonio Conte and presumably why he has found himself heading to Qatar with the rest of the England squad.
However, it appears as though Dier’s form this season has been the subject of some criticism.
The Latest: McAvennie slams Dier
Speaking to Football Insider, former Celtic striker McAvennies has been less than impressed by the defender’s efforts for Tottenham this season.
He said: “If they had a top centre-half they would not be conceding as many goals. I do not know what Dier has got, maybe he has got something on the manager or Daniel Levy. I do not know why he is still playing. As a striker all you need is a second to get past him.
“I just do not know why they have not bought a top centre-half. Conte obviously sees something that I don’t. I am not saying he is not a good player, but he is not a top centre-half and Tottenham need a top centre-half.”
The Verdict: Harsh words on Dier
Taking a deeper look at the 28-year-old’s performances in the league this season, he has made more clearances (47) than any other Spurs player and also posted the joint-third highest combined total of tackles and interceptions (33) at the club.
Even though Spurs have conceded 21 league goals this season, more than the likes of Manchester United (20), Brighton (19) and Crystal Palace (18) beneath them in the table, it’s clear that Dier has been a standout figure for them at the back and can boast a lot of defensive talent.
Therefore, bearing those figures in mind, McAvennie’s strong words about the Spurs player’s defensive acumen appear rather harsh.
With the World Cup just around the corner, this could give the £85k-per-week defender the chance to prove himself on the biggest stage possible and show why he deserves a place in the squad, proving a point to his detractors in the process.
