Speaking to Football Insider, former Premier League boss Alex McLeish has told Tottenham and, by extension, chairman Daniel Levy to replace Erik Lamela – touting a potential exit despite calling the attacker ‘exciting’ at times with a ‘magic left foot’.
Lamela has started just four Premier League games this season due to injury, with fitness issues a reoccurring theme of his time at Tottenham, but despite that, manager Jose Mourinho is a public admirer.
Speaking in a press conference (via the Evening Standard), Mourinho explained how much he loves Lamela – going on to say he ‘never hides’ and is a little bit ‘chaotic’.
Levy told to sell Lamela
Just recently, fellow Football Insider pundit Noel Whelan described him as a ‘world beater‘ on his day.
Regardless, when asked who Levy should replace, McLeish pointed to the Argentine.
“I do believe guys like Erik Lamela, he was one of the guys that came in when Bale left, he hasn’t really hit the heights that sometimes we see him at,” he explained to Football Insider.
“We spoke after the 5-4 thriller (v Everton) and Erik Lamela scored a couple of goals in that, he looked exciting and somebody with a magic left foot that’s almost like a wand at times, but it’s only really in little bits of the season.
“Then there’s a wee run of maybe two or three games and that kind of player is a bit of a maverick and does great things at times but then when you’re looking for consistency, that’s the difference.”
Transfer Tavern take
Whether or not the £80k-a-week earning Lamela makes way in the summer remains to be seen, but he could be one of the players up for nomination.
He hasn’t had a chance to feature as regularly due to reoccurring fitness issues, and before his contract runs out in 2022, Levy may have to find a buyer.
