Tottenham Hotspur defender Cristian Romero has been criticised by talkSPORT pundit Gabriel Agbonlahor for one key aspect of his game.

The Lowdown: Romero sent off...

The Argentine was sent off in Spurs' last Premier League encounter against Manchester City last weekend, putting a slight dampener on their hard-fought victory in north London.

Romero will now miss Tottenham's next match against Leicester City after picking up his sixth caution of the season in total, dealing a blow to Antonio Conte's side, with the manager now having to decide on an alternative.

Agbonlahor has since been critical of the former Atalanta star over his recklessness in matches.

The Latest: Agbonlahor criticises Romero...

The former Aston Villa striker (and now talkSPORT regular) has claimed to Football Insider that Romero 'gets very bored in games' and lunges into tackles needlessly.

Agbonlahor explained: “When I watch Romero, he’s always making me laugh. He’s like an old-school defender who gets very bored in games.

“The first yellow against Haaland was bizarre. Haaland was in his own half – why go off the floor and slide in? Someone needs to sit down with him and get him to calm down.

“He needs action to get him through a game, and that’s why he’ll get booked so often. It doesn’t make sense. Not many centre-halves dive in as much as he does – and he puts himself at risk.

“He can’t help himself, he just gets bored. But he’s going to cost Tottenham.”

The Verdict: Inexperience...

The 24-year-old is still fairly young, and his recklessness is likely to be ironed out over many years of playing at the top level.

Romero has already made an exciting start to his career as a top-level centre-back,having recently returned victorious from Argentina's 2022 World Cup triumph in Qatar.

The South American ace will have gained valuable know-how from that tournament, and incidents like the sending off against Man City may steadily teach him to make adjustments to his game.

That being said, another pundit in former Spurs defender Alan Hutton has urged the club not to take the fire out of the 24-year-old's game as that is one of Romero's best assets.

The Argentine has already been praised for some exceptional performances in a Lilywhites shirt, and we believe that Romero will eventually improve on his disciplinary record.
