Speaking on Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football, via Football Daily, pundit and former Manchester United defender Gary Neville has ripped into Tottenham summer signing Gareth Bale – claiming the Welshman has wound him up all season for smiling on the bench.
Bale, who was snapped up on loan from Real Madrid last summer, has so far failed to live up to expectations in north London with chairman Daniel Levy reportedly becoming more cautious over keeping him beyond this campaign (Eurosport).
Levy apparently set his heart on bringing the 31-year-old back to Tottenham, and while he is still willing to consider an extension for his stay, he looks set to be more clear-minded in his decision making (Eurosport).
Gary Neville rips into Bale
Neville, commenting on Bale for Sky Sports, has explained his frustration over one thing he has spotted from the winger this season – namely smiling from the bench.
When giving his verdict on Mourinho’s future, along with the Lilywhites boss’ treatment of Bale and Dele Alli, he explained to Sky:
“Is he going to bring Dele Alli and Bale round? I’m not saying he has to pander to these players,” said Neville.
“To be honest with you, Gareth Bale has wound me up all season, just watching him smile on the bench.
“Dele Alli, to be fair, I worked with him with England, I think he’s a brilliant talent but he should be doing a lot more, I want a lot more from, he’s an outstanding player.”
Transfer Tavern take
Mourinho, when asked about Bale at the beginning of the season, called him ‘remarkable’ (Sky Sports) – but it’s safe to say his opinion may have changed judging by the attacker’s lack of game time.
Time will tell whether he can work his way into the starting eleven before the end of this season, but time is running out for Bale to prove he is worth a potential summer investment.
