Tottenham Hotspur manager Antonio Conte is likely to snub summer signing Djed Spence this season, according to journalist Dean Jones.
The Lowdown: Spence arrives at Spurs…
The Lilywhites sealed a summer move for the 22-year-old, much to the excitement of many supporters and members of the media, with talkSPORT reporter Alex Crook even calling him the ‘perfect player‘ for Conte.
However, over the first six Premier League games of 2022/23, the Englishman has played just a single minute of top-flight action, with the manager heavily favouring Emerson Royal for the right wing-back role.
Homegrown and able to balance the books of Tottenham’s worrying homegrown quota, Spence’s arrival came with plenty of plus points, but it appears that he may have to be rather patient for first-team opportunities.
The Latest: Jones makes ‘disappointing’ Spence claim…
Speaking to GiveMeSport, Jones has shared his verdict on Spence’s signing whilst also believing that the defender could be set for Conte’s snub.
He explained: “I’d say the most disappointing signing might be Spence because I just don’t see him figuring.
“There was a pretty big build up to his arrival, but he has only played one minute so far, and Spurs even looked into signing an additional player in his position as the clock ticked down.”
The Verdict: Give him a chance?
The 22-year-old finished 2021/22 as one of Nottingham Forest’s best players by average match rating during his time at the City Ground and played a vital role in their promotion to the top flight, starting 41 matches throughout the season.
Spence should be handed a decent opportunity by Conte to prove his worth, especially considering that the club invested up to £20m to bring him to north London and face a hectic couple of months with the Champions League group stage kicking off this week.
