Alasdair Gold has provided an update on Spurs’ reported interest in Benfica centre-back Ruben Dias.
Football.London journalist Alasdair Gold has provided an update on Tottenham’s rumoured interest in Benfica ace Ruben Dias.
Reports in recent weeks have claimed that the Lilywhites are targeting the Portuguese centre-back ahead of a potential move this summer, but with the current uncertainty surrounding football at the moment, Gold admitted that the prospect of him actually joining may be an unlikely scenario.
When answering a question about whether Spurs could offer Juan Foyth and money for Dias in a Q&A on Football.London, Gold replied: “Ruben Dias is a player that Mourinho likes and he’s clearly one of Europe’s highly-rated young defenders. Personally I feel Juan Foyth has plenty of potential and hasn’t really had much of a chance to get a run of games.
If he doesn’t get regular game time then he’s going to want to leave but how much a fee for him would take off the price for Dias is another thing as is whether Foyth would want to go to Benfica. You’re probably looking at a player similar in price to Davinson Sanchez in Dias, around the £40m mark, a price that could be too much in the current financial climate.
“If Foyth and Vertonghen both move on, Tottenham will look at Dias but it has to be an achievable price.”
Will Spurs sign Ruben Dias this summer?
Just as will every other side in the Premier League will have to endure, Spurs will have to tighten the reins on any planned transfer sprees this summer.
What usually would have been an affordable price in last year’s market will certainly not be the case this time around, and the Lilywhites will have to be resourceful with the way they go about spending the money they do have.
Mourinho will no doubt be keen on reinforcing the centre of defence ahead of next season, particularly with Jan Vertonghen’s contract situation hanging over their heads. Dias could come in and command a starting berth, but whether Spurs are prepared to commit a large portion of their budget on one player when they may need three of four remains to be seen.
