Tottenham Hotspur could be set to finally get rid of Tanguy Ndombele at the end of the season.
The Lowdown: Ndombele’s time at Tottenham
Spurs signed the Frenchman for a a club-record fee of £63m under former manager Mauricio Pochettino in the summer of 2019.
Having made 91 appearances for the Lilywhites across all competitions, the midfielder was loaned back to Lyon for the second half of last season, only to then get loaned out again over the summer, this time to Napoli.
Despite the 25-year-old only being with the Serie A club on loan until the end of the season, it appears that some details have emerged about the possibility of Ndombele leaving Spurs on a permanent basis.
The Latest: Permanent Spurs exit?
According to a recent report from Football Insider, there is a £30m purchase option in the Napoli loan deal which will be triggered if they secure Champions League qualification for next season.
The report adds that Tottenham are ‘increasingly hopeful they can agree the permanent transfer of Ndombele next year, although a January transfer is seen as unlikely at this stage’.
The Verdict: Right move by Spurs
Even though Spurs spent a significant amount of money to sign the midfielder, potentially getting £30m for him in the summer would be great for the club, especially if they have no plans on using Ndombele in the team.
Having been slammed for his “shocking” behaviour by Spurs podcaster Chris Cowlin when he walked straight down the tunnel after being substituted against Morecambe last January, it’s likely that Antonio Conte won’t want to have the player in his squad again following that misdemeanour.
With Napoli looking very likely to secure Champions League football for next season, currently eight points clear at the top of Serie A, it seems that if this report is accurate, Spurs aren’t likely to see Ndombele at the club again.
Taking all that into account, it seems that the best thing Tottenham can do is to accept that their move for the Frenchman was not a successful one and use the £30m that they could reap for him to strengthen their squad next summer.
