Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg has been lavished with praise as Sky Sports pundit Paul Robinson explains why he's been 'surprised' with the Denmark international.

The Lowdown: Spurs seal win...

The Lilywhites sealed a solid 2-0 win at home to Everton in the Premier League on Saturday as Antonio Conte's side remain third in the table and level on points with champions Manchester City.

It took a while for Spurs to find the breakthrough as a stubborn away side set up by Frank Lampard aimed to make life as difficult as possible in north London. However, as Conte's men remained patient, their chance to take a lead came near the hour mark when officials rightly awarded Spurs a penalty.

Harry Kane converted from the spot for 1-0, with Danish star Hojbjerg eventually sealing a 2-0 victory with his own strike in the 86th minute.

The Latest: Robinson praises Hojbjerg...

Former Spurs goalkeeper Robinson has lavished praise on Hojbjerg, explaining his surprise at the 27-year-old's impeccable form right now.

He stated to Football Insider of the Denmark midfielder: “I’ve been surprised by how much he has stepped up this year.

“I thought he was the one who would make way for Yves Bissouma. The club spent a lot of money on Bissouma. I think Hojbjerg recognised that and stepped up.

“He is playing to a level that we have never seen before. He is playing his best football in a Spurs shirt. He is having an amazing season. He brings so much offensively and defensively.

“There were split opinions on him last season but there is no doubt now. He has risen to the challenge. He took the bull by the horns and said, ‘this is my shirt. You have to take it off me.’ Bissouma is having real trouble doing that.

“It has surprised me but you have to give him a lot of credit.”

The Verdict: Huge player...

As per WhoScored, the former Southampton star is indeed a huge player for Spurs going by the statistics.

Hojbjerg is one of only four players to start every single top-flight game under Conte this season and ranks as their second-best performer behind star striker Kane.

The 27-year-old has also impressed going forward, having scored as many goals as 2021/22 Golden Boot winner Son Heung-min whilst also sitting among Tottenham's top six players for shots, key passes and completed dribbles per 90 (WhoScored).

Therefore, the praise from Robinson is very much merited.
