Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Harry Winks is 'closing in' on a loan move to Sampdoria, according to the Evening Standard

The lowdown: One of our own...

A product of the youth system at Spurs, the academy graduate remains a one-club man at present, having amassed 203 senior outings for the Lilywhites so far.

However, after the 26-year-old was omitted from Antonio Conte's pre-season touring squad, it became clear that Winks wasn't part of the manager's plans in N17.

Having been training individually as the north Londoners sought suitable buyers, it appears as though a move to Serie A could be on the cards for the 10-cap Englishman...

The latest: Sampdoria 'closing in' on Winks

As per the Evening Standard, Winks is believed to be 'closing in' on a loan move to Sampdoria.

It's claimed that the 26-year-old is now heading for Italy after Spurs were 'initially holding out for possible Premier League interest'.

Under contract until 2024 (Transfermarkt), there is no mention of a purchase option in the report for the Englishman, who was once dubbed a 'fabulous' player by former Spurs goalkeeper Paul Robinson.

The verdict: Change needed

Having previously been a favourite under Mauricio Pochettino, starting the 2019 Champions League final and even eliciting comparisons with Spanish legends Andres Iniesta and Xavi, Winks' career has all but come to a standstill.

His last Premier League start under Conte was six months ago in the 4-0 win at Leeds, with the 26-year-old reliant on sporadic and fleeting substitute appearances since then.

Yet to play a solitary minute so far this term, the £13.5m-valued midfielder made 30 appearances across all competitions for the Lilywhites last season but was limited to nine top-flight starts.

Sharing similar stylistic traits with the likes of Jorginho, Daniel Parejo and Kevin Kampl (FBRef), hopefully Winks can recapture his best form with a spell away from north London, with a change of scenery seeming like the best option for him at the moment.
