Speaking to Football Insider, former Spurs defender and BBC 5 Live regular Alan Hutton has reacted to a major development involving former Lilywhites managerial target Julian Nagelsmann as the 33-year-old is announced as the next Bayern Munich boss.

Nagelsmann was heavily touted as a prime managerial target for Spurs before reports started to emerge of an agreement with Bayern (Fabrizio Romano).

Hutton gutted by Nagelsmann blow

Soon after these claims, Bayern themselves announced that Nagelsmann will be succeeding Hansi Flick in Bavaria as Tottenham miss out on one of the most exciting coaching talents of the last few years.

Hutton, reacting to the development, has called it a 'blow for Tottenham'.

"I think Levy would have known this could have been a possibility," claimed the pundit.

"Nagelsmann always spoke about the Bayern Munich job and it does not surprise me that he has jumped at it. It’s a blow for Tottenham, I think he would have been an unbelievable signing.

"You can see his style and his method so it definitely suits Tottenham. That one’s off the table so they’re going to have to look elsewhere.

“I think it’s going to have to be somebody in that type of mould, that type of manager to really take them forward."

Transfer Tavern take

According to The Times, the Munich-bound coach was Tottenham's number one target, so this is certainly a major blow, as Hutton suggests.

That said, with Nagelsmann out of the picture, one man possessing similar traits is Ajax boss Erik Ten Hag, who has recently entered the Spurs managerial fray.

He has been likened to Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola for his electric brand of attacking football and emphasis on the Cruyffian philosophy (AS), something which would surely be music to the ears of Spurs fans after missing out on an equally exciting attacking style under Nagelsmann.

Ten Hag has also been revered for his work nurturing young players, and with Spurs starlets like Oliver Skipp and Dane Scarlett rising through the ranks, he could be a more than ideal alternative to Nagelsmann.
