BBC pundit Alan Shearer has criticised Tottenham Hotspur star Harry Kane for his disappointing performance against Chelsea on Sunday.

The Lowdown: Two straight defeats

Under Nuno Espirito Santo, Spurs started the 2021/22 season in perfect fashion with three straight 1-0 victories over Manchester City, Wolverhampton Wanderers and Watford before the first international break.

Since then, they are without a victory in three games across all competitions and have lost their previous two Premier League games 3-0 to Crystal Palace and Chelsea.

Kane is still without a league goal this season after returning to the squad in the win at Wolves and has received criticism for his display against Thomas Tuchel's side from another prolific Premier League goalscorer.

The Latest: Shearer not happy with Kane

Speaking on Match of the Day 2 on Sunday evening, former Newcastle United striker Alan Shearer explained how the England international was a peripheral figure for Spurs in the defeat to their London rivals.

He said [via TBR Football]: "Too many times Harry Kane was quite content to sit in the midfield and try and direct things from midfield.

"We know he's good at that, we know he can do that. But at times, it's not helping him. And it's certainly not helping his team."

The Verdict: Regretting his decision

After opting to stick it out with Tottenham and remain at the club, despite strong interest from Manchester City, Kane's goalless run will be a worrying sight for Nuno, the player himself and the club.

The 28-year-old gave the ball away 11 times in the defeat to Chelsea and was a ghost whenever Spurs attacked Kepa Arrizabalaga's goal at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. His deep-lying nature in the Spurs squad normally works well with Heung-min Son, but the Blues defence nullified it well, while his heatmap from the game shows that he barely threatened the penalty area all afternoon.

His two goals this season came in the Europa Conference League qualifying round against Pacos de Ferreira and so far has failed to muster anywhere near the same opportunities he has done in previous campaigns for the club. Given Kane's below-par form of late, Shearer's criticism appears to be justified.
