Speaking to Football.London, Alasdair Gold claims Spurs silverware ‘can happen’ this season – waxing lyrical over the ‘next level’ Jose Mourinho as a key factor.
After a summer of brilliant deals, orchestrated by the Tottenham boss and chairman Daniel Levy, Gold has issued his stance on Lilywhites glory over 2020/2021.
Mourinho can deliver…
Even though Gold holds ex-boss and fan favourite Mauricio Pochettino in high esteem, he also claimed that Mourinho is the ‘next level’ when it comes to winning trophies.
Speaking to Lee Wilmot, the journalist has claimed Tottenham can indeed challenge – especially after six marquee summer signings.
Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, Joe Hart, Matt Doherty, Sergio Reguilon and Carlos Vincius – coupled with the sensational return of Gareth Bale – should excite many Lilywhites when it comes to the prospect of a successful season.
Gold certainly didn’t hold back his thoughts on a trophy challenge, claiming it can happen, especially with the ex-Chelsea hero at Spurs’ helm.
What we think…
Bale’s return has certainly grabbed all the headlines, but snapping up other star players in key positions was also huge from Levy.
Doherty, who is now set to tussle with Serge Aurier for the right-back spot, is arguably one of the summer window’s biggest bargains – signing for just £15 million in late August.
Meanwhile, the acquisition of Vinicius will prove crucial given Spurs’ 14-month-long wait for Harry Kane’s deputy.
Reguilon could also add a whole new dimension at left-back given his performances for Sevilla last season, with many weakened positions now shored up and primed ahead of a congested season.
Taking all this into account, it’s fair to say Gold could be right in his verdict – Spurs have a real chance of winning trophies this season, perhaps even more so than in Pochettino’s prime.
