Tottenham Hotspur will offer manager Antonio Conte a new contract for financial security, says Sky Sports pundit Paul Robinson.

The Lowdown: Conte’s contract

Having joined Spurs on an 18-month deal towards the end of last year, the 53-year-old has entered the final ten months of his contract with the Lilywhites, which is set to expire in the summer of 2023.

Serie A journalist Paolo Bargiggia has recently suggested the Italian is unlikely to renew his contract with the north London outfit, claiming he is eyeing a return to Juventus at the end of the season.

The Latest: Robinson’s claim

Robinson, former N17 shot-stopper often works as a pundit for Sky Sports, has said a new deal for Conte at Tottenham would not keep the manager at the club; instead, it would only ensure a greater compensation package for when he leaves.

Speaking with Football Insider, the former Spurs goalkeeper said:

“Contracts are not worth the paper they are written on when it comes to trying to keep managers.

“If a club wants your manager they will happily pay the price.

“What a new deal would provide though is financial security for the club. That is why I think they will be in talks with Conte over a new deal. The club would get more money if Conte was tied to a long-term contract.

“If a so-called bigger fish comes for your manager they normally take him. You only have to look at [Graham] Potter and Chelsea. It happens regardless of whether the manager has five months or five years on his contract.

“It just depends changes the amount of compensation. There is not a lot you can do if one of the biggest clubs in Europe wants your manager.”

The Verdict: Would be a huge loss

Since Conte arrived at Hotspur Way in November last year, Tottenham's squad, as a collective, have looked like a different team compared to the one led by Nuno Espirito Santo.

To date, Conte has achieved 1.96 points per match whilst in charge at N17, whereas the former Spurs boss left the club having averaged a poor 1.65 points per match.

With the likes of Harry Kane much happier with the Italian at the helm, Conte's position at the north London club is crucial to the Lilywhites’ success.

Therefore, his departure would deal Daniel Levy and co a huge blow in their pursuit of silverware and their quest to keep players like Kane at the club.
