Tottenham Hotspur have announced that young defender Japhet Tanganga has signed a new contract with the club, which will keep him in north London until the summer of 2025.
The 21-year-old’s situation had dragged on for a while, with The Athletic reporting in June that talks had stalled between the relevant parties. However, the club have finally convinced the youngster to put pen-to-paper.
2019/20 was a breakthrough season for the academy graduate, who made 11 appearances for the senior team in all competitions including six in the Premier League (Transfermarkt).
He managed to impress during his time in Jose Mourinho’s side, showing incredible versatility by performing in four different roles with the majority of those being in the defensive unit. In his six Premier League appearances he managed to average 2.8 tackles, 1.8 interceptions and a staggering 4.8 clearances per match (WhoScored).
His stats highlight that he is already showing that he is capable of playing in the English top flight and given his young age, he has the potential to become a huge player for Spurs in the future. Indeed, this was alluded to by journalist Jonathan Veal who, following the announcement of Tanganga’s new contract, suggested he could become ‘colossal’ for the club in the next five years.

There is little doubt that getting one of their brightest young talents to pen fresh terms is a great piece of business from Daniel Levy and Spurs, he could become a real asset to them going forward both on and off the pitch. Indeed, his market value has already risen from £720,000 in September 2019 to £6.48m by the end of the campaign and that will only increase further in the coming years if he continues to progress.
He follows in the footsteps of Eric Dier and Oliver Skipp who have also extended their stays at Tottenham and it is starting to become clear who Mourinho is identifying as potentially crucial players in his squad going forward.
