Tottenham Hotspur defender Eric Dier could be at risk of missing out on a place in England's squad for the upcoming World Cup in Qatar.

The Lowdown: Dier's England appearances

The defender completed the full 90 minutes in both of England's two previous games against Italy and Germany in September. This shows that Gareth Southgate does see the 28-year-old as a viable option to include in his squad for the upcoming tournament.

However, it seems that one Spurs expert believes Dier's recent form at club level could hinder his chances of travelling to Qatar later this month.

The Latest: Doubts over Dier

Speaking to Football Insider on Monday, Spurs expert John Wenham - who regularly breaks news about the club on the Lilywhite Rose social media channels - addressed Dier's current situation with the World Cup around the corner.

He said: "I will always stick up for Eric Dier but since I named him as one of the best centre-backs in the league his form has gone off a cliff.

"It’s since the England recall. He went away with confidence and he scored in that last game before the international break.

"His form has just deteriorated. You hate to see it and I’m sorry to see that because he worked so hard for that recall and he thoroughly deserves it after the last 18 months.

"But for whatever reason, his form has been poor in recent weeks. It was a big, big error that cost us in a big, big game [vs Liverpool].

"I just hope he can get his composure back in time for the Leeds game. Southgate was at the game yesterday, his place may now be in jeopardy."

The Verdict: A big decision for Southgate

As Wenham mentioned, it was a mistake from the £85k-per-week Englishman which led to Mohamed Salah doubling Liverpool's lead in Tottenham's 2-1 defeat to the Reds at the weekend.

Despite that costly error, though, the 28-year-old still showed that he's capable of contributing plenty to the collective effort by making more clearances (three), blocks (one), interceptions (three) and tackles (two) than fellow centre-backs Ben Davies and Clement Lenglet.

Looking at the season as a whole, Dier has made more clearances (45) than any other player in Antonio Conte's squad, further highlighting how diligent he is at the back and how dominant he can be in the air.

Regardless of the dip in form that Wenham thinks the defender has suffered in recent weeks, we feel that Dier will be in the England squad for the World Cup and be a prominent figure for Southgate's team in Qatar.
