Speaking to the press, Spurs boss Jose Mourinho has confirmed that Erik Lamela will miss the clash with Leicester City today, despite his return to training – going on to say that he is ‘not even very close’ to being ready for match action.
Lamela, who has been out of action since picking up an Achilles injury in early November, is slowly making his way back to the Tottenham first team fold as his return to training has been confirmed by Mourinho.
Lamela misses Leicester
With him now back out on the grass, Spurs fans could see their ‘phenomenal‘ Argentine attacker on the field in competitive action in the foreseeable future but certainly not this afternoon – with Mourinho claiming that he isn’t close to being match fit just yet.
Before his latest injury, Lamela appeared to be a favoured option – making 25 English top-flight appearances in total last campaign both as a starter and from the bench.
This season, Mourinho has picked him for two starts – with the Argentine even accumulating more Premier League cameos than star summer signing Gareth Bale (WhoScored).
However, as he works to get back to full fitness, Spurs will be without him for their battle with the Foxes as Mourinho decides between using Steven Bergwijn, Lucas Moura or Bale for a start on the right-hand side.
Transfer Tavern take
Over recent games, the Lilywhites boss has favoured Bergwijn, seemingly for his work rate and intensity – but it remains to be seen whether he will, in fact, start today after his squandered two great chances against Liverpool in midweek.
Whoever Mourinho does pick for today, they will have to work hard as Spurs will come up against a well-drilled fourth-placed Leicester team.
