Speaking to Football Insider, pundit Frank McAvennie has been wowed by Tottenham and their decision to sign Gareth Bale from Real Madrid this summer – even despite Jose Mourinho opting not to play him in large parts so far this campaign.
The signing of Bale from the Galacticos attracted a lot of media attention, especially given his heroic return to north London after making a name for himself, but fitness issues have resulted in the Welshman failing to pick up regular Premier League minutes.
McAvennie wowed by Bale move
Mourinho’s decision not to play Bale more has attracted criticism from sections of the media – but McAvennie still believes the decision to sign Bale was a ‘wondrous’ one as he is wowed by Daniel Levy’s head-turning move.
The West Ham legend claims his acquisition was the ‘kick up the backside’ Spurs needed as they chase silverware for the first time since 2008.
“Spurs are paying a lot of money to bring him over but I still think it is a wondrous move.
“Him just being there has given the other boys the kick up the backside they needed. It might have been the push the whole team has needed.
“Even though he is not fit it might be a genius move from Mourinho.”
Transfer Tavern take
Described as a ‘most unexpected‘ development back in September when it was announced he would be making the move, Mourinho could certainly use Bale’s influence ahead of a busy festive period.
Time will tell whether the Spurs boss does begin to start him, but McAvennie could be right in saying it was a ‘wondrous move’ to bring him back.
