Tottenham Hotspur: Graham Roberts eager for Steven Gerrard appointment

Tottenham Hotspur: Graham Roberts eager for Steven Gerrard appointment - Tottenham Hotspur News

Speaking to FootballFanCast, Graham Roberts has namedropped Rangers boss Steven Gerrard as an ideal appointment for Spurs, claiming that the former Liverpool midfielder would be a ‘great choice’ for chairman Daniel Levy.

The Lowdown: Gerrard loosely mentioned

Of all the British managers linked to Spurs, including Graham Potter and Scott Parker, Gerrard is a name which gets mentioned slightly less by comparison.

Can you name all 10 ex-Spurs players?

Indeed, a report by 90min back in March detailed that the 40-year-old was on Spurs’ shortlist to replace Jose Mourinho while the Portuguese was still in charge.

He has also been recommended as a worthy suitor by Tony Cascarino, who explained in a column for The Times how Gerrard could be the man to ‘rescue’ Tottenham.

The Latest: Roberts eager for Gerrard

Speaking to FFC, former Tottenham defender Roberts – who played for the Lilywhites between 1980 and 1986 – has urged his former club to appoint Gerrard, who he feels would be a ‘great choice’ for the role.

“You’ve got Steven Gerrard at Rangers,” the 61-year-old explained.

“I think he’ll stay there but he’s done absolutely unbelievable. He would be a great choice.”

The former England international has recently helped to end Celtic’s nine-year stranglehold on the Premiership by guiding Rangers to the 2020/21 league crown.

He is also a big fan of Harry Kane, with the Premier League legend professing his admiration for the Spurs striker back in 2017.

The Verdict: Credible outsider?

Even though Gerrard’s only senior managerial tenure so far has come with the Gers, you could argue he has helped enormously to instil a winning mentality at Ibrox.

Since taking over in 2018, the Light Blues manager has averaged over two points per match, winning an incredible 130 games out of 202 in all competitions (Transfermarkt).

The biggest bone of contention for Spurs fans could be his lack of Premier League experience in a managerial setting. However, he has attracted praise for being an ‘exciting’ young manager (Football Insider), and that is exactly the kind of boss that Spurs are seeking, according to reports (The Daily Mail).

Therefore, we believe the 40-year-old could actually be a credible candidate for the role if approached by Tottenham, and Roberts is right to recommend him as a possible successor to Mourinho.
