Tottenham Hotspur's interest in Leicester City midfielder James Maddison 'could become concrete', according to transfer expert Ben Jacobs.

The Lowdown: Transfer battle

According to a report from Football Insider back in September, Maddison was 'very keen' on a move to Spurs, amid interest from Newcastle United, which is still lingering.

Eddie Howe twice tried to bring the midfielder to St. James' Park during the summer, but bids of up to £50m were turned down, however with his contract entering its final 18 months, it appears like he will soon be leaving, it is just a case of where.

The Latest: Jacobs' update

Speaking to GIVEMESPORT, Jacobs gave an update about what the 26-year-old's next destination could be, saying:

“The suitors that have looked at James Maddison, which is predominantly Newcastle but to a lesser extent Tottenham, are a little bit uncertain still as to where they’re going to finish.

“If he is choosing between a London move to Spurs, which is not concrete yet but could become concrete over the coming months, or Newcastle, if he picks now, in hindsight he might feel that he’s made the wrong choice because the team he chooses in January might not make the Champions League and the other one might.”

The Verdict: Champions League needed

This type of situation is exactly why finishing in the top four is so important, as it gives clubs the edge when it comes to signing proven top-level players, a description that is definitely fitting for the Englishman.

In 35 Premier League appearances last season, the former Norwich man weighed in with a very impressive 12 goals and eight assists, no mean feat given that Leicester were not as impressive as they had been in previous years, finishing eighth.

Lauded as an 'elite baller' by podcaster Al Foran, Maddison would be an excellent addition to Antonio Conte's squad, and he is the type of signing needed if Spurs have any hope of convincing Harry Kane to extend his stay at the club beyond 2024.
